Unlike existing work which decomposes an image into a series of frames (i.e. each frame is assumed to be independent) or extracts multiple features (i.e. each feature is assumed to be independent), our method extracts multiple contextual features that encode interactions between neighboring regions of an image. This is motivated by the observation that facial expression recognition is highly context-dependent, e.g. different contexts may focus on different features. We consider two types of contextual features: (1) interactions between different groups of features, e.g. between frames, features, or neighboring regions; (2) correlations between features in a certain feature group, e.g. within a single frame or neighboring regions. We propose a multi-stage network architecture, and extend this framework to a multi-context framework. We conduct extensive experiments on the widely used Cohn-Kanade (CK+) and Multi-PIE (MPIE) datasets. Our results show that the proposed multi-context feature extraction network outperforms existing approaches which only use individual features in different stages and the conventional multi-stage framework. We also conduct ablation studies to further investigate the contributions of different feature groups and show that contextual features are important for improved recognition accuracy.
We present a new dataset containing 35,990 pairs of frames of full face videos of 40 actors with emotional expressions in six different emotions: happiness, sadness, fear, disgust, surprise, and neutral. In addition, we also annotate the text (e.g. text on the shirt, on the forehead) and age (in years) of each subject.Recent Articles
The official publication of today's meeting of the US International Trade Commission (USITC) is not set to be released until next week.
However, leaked meeting transcripts published by the Electronic Frontier Foundation show that the panel has punted on a decision on allegations of RIM's (Research in Motion) patent infringement.
In an official statement about the meeting, the USITC said it was "unable to reach a decision regarding a determination on the importation of RIM’s products for infringing IP [intellectual property]. This decision is subject to final written 0b46394aab
