Netflix is hoping to change that perception. They are launching a video service called Prime Video that will be free for Prime members and offer all kinds of movies and TV shows on demand.
One of the key differences between the Amazon Prime service and this Netflix offering is that Amazon Prime offers video on demand (VOD). With this new service, Netflix is promising to offer more current content than Amazon Prime. However, Netflix is still only offering older TV shows and movies for instant viewing on demand. It will be interesting to see how well this service works out.
Both streaming services have their advantages and disadvantages, but one thing that is common between the services is that they aren't available on every platform. Amazon only streams on Amazon devices, and Netflix streams on Netflix's open source Internet protocol (IP) (OFNIP). This means that many of the people who watch their favorite shows and movies on Netflix can't watch them on their Amazon Fire TV, Kindle Fire, or Fire TV Stick. This also means that many viewers may prefer to use one service versus the other. This isn't exactly a huge issue for content compared to how much content there is, but it can be an issue for people who want to watch movies and TV shows on the go on their smartphones or tablets. Fortunately, Amazon has acknowledged these issues and has announced that they will add support for both Netflix and Amazon Prime in the future.
